The disorders and diseases of digestive system are more common than we realize. One in every ten patients visiting doctor’s office are having chief complaint of indigestion. Digestive system disorders are often underrated because usually people shy away and don’t discuss with each other. There are several digestive tract diseases which if not timely treated, can lead to mortality or morbidity. Our abdomen is like a magic box. Sometimes there are potentially life threatening diseases and disorders like various carcinomas of digestive tract, which initially present with very mild symptoms. On the other hand sometimes, symptoms are so pronounces and the problem comes out to be quite benign. If you feel any abnormality in your digestion, you should definitely see a doctor and get treated timely.
Following are few digestive tract diseases which can be effectively treated with Ayurveda :
Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) : This is also called acid reflux disease. GERD is one of the most commonly occurring diseases of digestive tract . If you frequently feel heart burn i.e a burning sensation in center of chest just behind the sternum, you are probably having GERD. Other symptoms include nausea, teeth erosion, foul smell from mouth, lack of appetite, trouble in swallowing and throat irritation, you are probably suffering from GERD. This disease is the outcome of having hot spicy, acidic foods and beverages. Over eating and eating at wrong time and interval. GERD can be easily treated by Ayurvedic medicines and right kind of lifestyle suggested in Ayurveda.
Gallstones : Gall bladder is a small pear shaped part of liver which stores bile, responsible for fat digestion. Sometimes there is excess of cholesterol in gall bladder and its not empty properly. It takes form of hard stones.Almost 20% population has gall bladder stones. When the duct connecting the gall bladder to intestine gets obstructed due to these stones, there is a sharp pain in right side of upper abdomen, some times radiating towards back. There are certain medicines in Ayurvedic pathy which can effectively dissolve these stones. If this doesn’t help, cholecytectomy surgery is the only option you are left with, to get rid of gall stones.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) : Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common disease of digestive system. Statistically 10 to 15 % population of developed countries have one or more symptoms of IBS. In Ayurveda, the irritable bowl syndrome is called ”grahni” or ”sangrahni vikar”. There is no known cause of irritable bowl syndrome. There are no specific investigations either to make a diagnosis. The diagnosis is generally based on clinical signs and symptoms. Physiologically there are no changes in the gut. The diagnosis of IBS is usually made by law of elimination. When all the other diseases are ruled out, the patient is labeled as suffering from IBS. Symptoms are also non specific. Generally there are symptoms of dull pain, bloating, altered diarrhea and constipation. There is mortality or morbidity associated with IBS but it makes the patient’s life miserable. The person having IBS usually waste considerable time pondering over the diseases and being irritated by the symptoms. There are several triggering factors of IBS. Enteric infections, some foods which induce inflammation to the gut, hereditary factors, anxious nature, depressive attitude are few of them. Modern stressful life style and altered food habits are responsible for the rising number of IBS cases globally.
